I found my 'forever mug' last week in Colorado

Bigfoot Mug

This Bigfoot Obsessed Retro Dad found his forever mug last week while visiting Colorado. I procured this beautiful ceramic mug in Old Town Fort Collins at a store called 'The Cupboard'. It was made by a Colorado company called 'Two Little Fruits'. It's a beefy 20 ounce mug that keeps my coffee warm, and holds plenty of it.

BIGFOOT

I remember there being reported Bigfoot sightings in the Red Feather Lakes area of Larimer County when I was a kid. In the years since, I've noticed that Fort Collins and much of Colorado for that matter, are really leaning into that very Bigfoot lore.

You never know what wonders you'll find while shopping in Old Town, which is why I always make a trip there whenever I'm in town. My last few trips have garnered some great Bigfoot finds, and I will be keeping a sharper eye out for more next time I visit.

1978 Happy Meal Space Raiders toys from McDonald's

You've got to admit, some of todays fun meal toys are pretty dang impressive. However, the ones I acquired as a kid hold a special place in my heart. Particularly my complete set of 1978 Space Raider Happy Meal toys. They were made by a toy company called Diener, and the set consists of four alien figures and four space ships. All of the figures in the set are roughly two and a half inches, were made of a soft bendable rubber, and came in a variety of about 5 different colors.

Aliens.. Brak, Zama, Dard and Horta
and ships.. Altair 2, Ceti-3, Krygo 5, and Lyra 4

These guys hail from the era when Happy Meals always came in those cool boxes, and included a free package of McDonald Land cookies. When these figures were released, the STAR WARS craze was in full effect, and kids were scrambling to get their hands on anything sci-fi related.

I remember obtaining my very first Space Raider figure which was Brak (The green fellow with the big brain). I remember placing him in the Happy Meal box for safe keeping on the trip home. Upon retrieving him from the box, I noticed he was coated with French fry salt that had collected at the bottom of the box. It was hard as heck to get the salt granules off of him, so I gave him a bath in the kitchen sink with some Dawn dish soap. I soon learned that these guys would need a regular hygiene regimen to keep them looking presentable. The type of rubber that they were made of seemed to be a magnet for hair, lint, dirt, dust, sand, and all manner of filth.

Each alien had their name clearly printed on the front of them, as did the ships. You had no clue as to which ship was paired with each alien, so usually you would just match them up by color. Collectors often refer to these as rubber eraser figures. I even remember kids at school trying to use them for this purpose. These attempts usually resulted in making a big mess of your school work, because the rubber would just smear the pencil marks rather than removing them from the paper.

Diener also produced other rubber and plastic toys for other companies in the 70's and 80's. In fact, there was another Space Creatures Happy Meal toy set they made in the 1980's. You can see the more monster-esque Happy Meal toy line here at Neato Coolville.

I loved my Space Raiders, and had hours of fun playing with them.  I guess they weren't too different from the non articulated cowboys and Indians, or green army men I grew up with.  Those simple yet great toys forced you to use your imagination, provided a kid with endless hours of fun, and I for one have many great memories of playing with them.

October 11th is National Sausage Pizza Day

Happy National Sausage Pizza Day friends! It seems like it was just yesterday that we were celebrating National Pepperoni Pizza Day.

October 11th is National Sausage Pizza Day

While Pepperoni is the most popular pizza topping in the U.S., I'd wager that sausage isn't too far behind. I'm really pressed for time, but am going to try my best to dine on a sausage topped pizza today, even if I have to swing by Little Caesars to pick one up.

Enjoy your Sausage covered pies my friends, and Happy Holidays!

I miss book, music and movie stores

This is an old a picture of the now defunct Hastings store in Greeley Colorado. Things being how they are today with technology and whatnot, forced this store to close a couple of years ago around 2012.  Hastings was one of my favorite stores to frequent. They sold new and used books, music, and movies, as well as a hodgepodge of other items appealing to musicians, skaters, geeks, gamers, and pop culture fanatics. I can honestly say that there was something for everyone in this store.

My world was truly shaken when I learned the news that Hastings Greeley was closing. From the sound of it, employees were just as shocked by the news as I was. They were told of the bad news just two days prior to when the general public was notified. Apparently their lease was up, and the landlord found another tenant that wanted to take over the retail space. Rather than move to a new location, folks at corporate decided to cut their losses and close the store.

Conventional wisdom dictates that this is another classic case of how technology is changing the landscape of the retail market, in regards to virtually every type of media. Like everyone else, Hastings has seen their video rental business steadily decrease thanks to Red Box, Netflix, and on demand programming. Retail publication and music sales also continue to falter because of digital downloads. I guess stores like Hastings, Borders, and Barnes and Noble are becoming dinosaurs in this day and age.  It's a simple fact that can't be denied, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

I'm old school. I love to spend hours browsing through music, book, magazine, and movie sections in stores. However, being able to do so is becoming harder and harder to do. An e-book just doesn't do it for me, nor does an electronic copy of an album, or streaming movies from my phone. Mind you, I'm not opposed to technology, I just don't believe that we need to replace all media with convenient streamlined digital alternatives. Everything we need is now becoming immediately available. I can already see myself and many others close to me becoming inpatient and anxious, all for the sake of immediate gratification.

I could go on and on forever about digital vs. traditional media, but I think I'll cool it for now. Instead, let's take a look at a few things that made stores like Hastings so great..

Hastings - Books
What's better than browsing through a book store, knowing that there are all kinds of hidden treasures you never knew existed just waiting to be found?

Hastings - Kids Section
I loved taking my kids to book stores like this and letting them pick out books that we could read together.  Sadly, the feel of many book stores these days are less than inviting.

Hastings - Board Games
These boxes contain something called 'Board Games'.  It's a strange concept, but these are non electronic games of strategy and chance, played by following a set of pre determined rules. It's what folks used to do for fun before Angry Birds and X-Box.

Hastings - Music section

A cornucopia of music that you can pick up, see, and feel.  There's something to be said for an LP or  CD with its dust jacket that can include lyrics, stories and insight from the artist's themselves, and of course, the cover art.

Hastings - Rental Movie section
I'm thinking Red Box doesn't have quite as extensive of a movie selection as this store had.

Hastings Vinyl LPs
A lot of new artists are getting their new albums pressed to vinyl these days in addition to digital and compact disc.  When Hastings closed, the places to find new vinyl in these parts are far and few between.

Hastings Comic Book Section

I am a child of the 70s and 80s, and therefore appreciate a good comic book. Hastings had a large section of floor space dedicated to new and old comics, as well as other comic related merchandise like action figures, collectibles, and apparel. At the time of Hastings closing, the town of Greeley Colorado was left without a single comic book store, which had me going through some serious withdrawals.

I can't tell you how many oddball and wacky pop culture items I bought from Hastings over the years. Great items like these pictured below were always readily available for purchase..

Bacon Air Freshener
Cover up that nasty new car scent with bacon air freshener

Zombie and Brain Jell-o Molds
Zombie Brain and Heart gelatin molds will ensure that your next dinner party will be a hit!

All purpose Luchador Mask
A Lucha Libre wrestling mask
should be a staple in every man's wardrobe

Nun-Zilla
Nunzilla.. a fire breathing, spark spitting wind up toy.
I ended up buying this

Herman Munster Action Figure
One of the coolest retro action figures I've ever seen

Twilight Zone "Mystic Seer"
Twilight Zone 'Mystic Seer'
This is just like the little fortune telling machine that William Shatner got addicted to using in the 1960 Twilight Zone episode "Nick of Time". I almost bought this cool little unit, but couldn't pull the trigger because he still kinda freaks me out after all of these years.

ZOMBIEZ 'Eat Flesh'
Wicked cool tees and geek-wear were always abundant

Headwear for Geeks
Assortment of headwear for the discerning geek

Yes.. Hastings was way more than just a video and music store.  It felt as if they went out of their way to appeal to the masses, and it truly was an end of an era when they closed. They are still sorely missed by many Greeley residents, and surely will be for a long time to come.

Update 10/10/2023
Hastings filed for bankruptcy somewhere around 2016 sealing their fate and in a sense, ending an era for many. I read this article now that I penned almost a decade ago and can't believe how much things have changed since then.

While I originally had a bit of an aversion to the shift in how we were starting to consume media, I must admit I do not purchase as much these days apart from retro video games, books and the occasional LP. I am indeed much less patient than I used to be, and it has everything to do with how I consume my information, entertainment and news. It's for this reason that I force myself to grab the occasional newspaper, crossword puzzle book, play vintage games, and shoot analog photos.

In my humble opinion, we must occasionally force ourselves to slow down and take pause. Our brains need the occasional break from the constant bombardment of information we are exposed to. Retro media formats and using antiquated tech is a great way to accomplish this. I really want to cover some of the ways I do this personally, so keep an eye out.

October 9th is National Beer and Pizza Day

Oh what a day this is for fans of beer and pizza! I mean, its always a good time for beer and pizza, but to have a whole day dedicated to its observance is truly a wonderful thing.

To me it means a little something more this year. My daughter actually got married on October 9th last year. That's right, my Daughter and Son-in-Law now share an anniversary with this wonderful holiday.

October 9th is National Beer and Pizza Day

Rest assured that when their anniversary date rolls around and they can spend time with us, I will be throwing them quite the shindig annually with lots of pizza (which they also are very passionate about) along with a fine selection of beer.

What a great topic for conversation at parties and gatherings as well! I wish my birthday or anniversary was on National Beer and Pizza Day. I think my birthday is on Arbor Day or something like that.

Anyway, have a very merry National Beer and Pizza day my friends. I know I will!

Hostess Fruit Pies 'Incredible Hulk' Marvel Comic Book Ad

Hostess Comic Book Ad
He does make a valid point

I was an avid comic book reader during my youth. Back in the 70s and 80s I particularly remember full page ads by Hostess that were tied in with various Marvel super heroes.

I've always loved Hostess Fruit Pies, and on more than one occasion, these ads got me to put the comic books down, hop on my bike, and ride to the corner store to buy one. I can absolutely see masses of children doing the same thing back in the day.

It's a throwback from a time when advertising geared towards kids had a lot of thought put into it. Companies used to fight for your business, and it showed in the promotion and ads they ran. The tag lines were even more fun. I don't think I could ever forget the "You get a big delight in every bite" Hostess slogan.

Below is an ad from the front inside cover of a "Walt Disney's Comics and Stories" comic book that I've owned since 1980. Click on the image to enlarge, and enjoy..

Hostess Incredible Hulk Ad

Hostess went bankrupt several years ago and as new owners took over, much of the magic and quality faded from the brand. I read last week that the J.M. Smucker Company acquired Hostess through a deal they struck on September 11th 2023, for around $5.6 billon dollars. I don't think they could do any worse than previous owners Apollo Global Management.

Over the last decade, I've watched the brand drop popular products, decrease portion size, skimp on quality, and steadily lose relevance in the snack cake industry. I am keeping a watchful eye, hoping J.M. Smuckers brings back some of the old magic that made the brand so great, or at the very least improve upon the quality and distribution of their products. Time will tell..

October is National Pizza Month

Happy National Pizza Month friends. I love National Pizza month, and as a result, the blog may have a wee bit more pizza related content this month.

Honestly, I'll use any excuse to eat more pizza, and National Pizza Month is the perfect excuse to do so! I'll be posting a few reviews and will try to put a retro spin on the content whenever I can.

 Stay tuned, and Happy Holidays!

1975 Jack in the Box Bendable Buddies Fast Food Toys

Jack in the Box LogoMy first memories of dining on fast food were at Jack in the Box. I remember my Dad and I visiting the drive through in his old Ford Falcon station wagon. I always used to giggle when he would talk into the big clown head to order our food.

One day we pulled up to the drive through window and something caught my eye. Just inside the window was a little poster featuring Jack in the Box action figures! Just as McDonald's had characters like Ronald, Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, Big Mac, & Grimace, to market their product towards children, Jack in the Box also had their own cast of characters to help sell Jumbo Jacks.

I begged my dad to buy me one, and he shelled out twenty five cents of his hard earned money for an "Onion Ring Thing" figure. What a Dad! Back in those days, twenty five cents could buy you a half gallon of gasoline. He continued purchasing different figures for my brother and I every time we visited Jack in the Box. These were some of my favorite toys from my early childhood, and I got endless hours of enjoyment playing with them.

1975 Jack in the Box Bendable Buddies Action Figures

Tired of the hustle and bustle of California, my family moved to Colorado in 1977. Sadly, my set of figures were lost during that move. For decades I fondly reminisced about these toys and wondered what ever happened to them. As an adult I swore that if I ever came across any of these figures, I would snatch them up no matter what the cost.

For a span of about eight years, I scoured the web looking for these toys on auction and toy websites to no avail. Then, in the spring of 2007 I found an online antique store that had the entire set of toys I was seeking. Yes, I once again became the proud owner of a complete set of 1975 Jack in the Box Bendy Figures. So come along and meet the marketing that helped mold many a hamburger and fast food connoisseur of modern times.

70s Jack in the Box Advertising characters

The Fab Five's likenesses appeared on collectible cups, comics, storybook's, and a slew of kids meal prizes. The most memorable Jack in the Box fast food toys from my childhood are the Bendy action figures pictured below. These Jack in the Box Bendable Buddies roughly stand about four inches tall, and were made by Imperial toy company in 1975.

"Jack the Clown"
Jack the Clown Bendy figThe ringleader himself! Through the 70s, his face graced most everything connected with Jack in the Box from food packaging to advertisements. Surprisingly, he was the most sane and well adjusted character of this bunch.

"Onion Ring Thing"
Onion Ring Thing Bendy FigA Hyper little fellow that always seemed to be goofing around and shouting "Hoo Hoo!" He's the kind of guy that you'd like to sock in the stomach.. if he had one.

"Small Fry"
Small Fry Bendy FigSmall Fry was a kid that was always hanging around and asking Jack questions. The storybooks depicted him as being a little kid, but the bendy fig makes him look more like an awkward teenager that's always half asleep.

"Secret Sauce Agent"
Secret Sauce AgentI'm not quite sure what Secret Sauce Agent contributed to Jack's Clique. Maybe his job was to guard the secret sauce from Ronald and the Burger King? He always had a big grin on his face, and was constantly peeking around corners and lurking about. He'd pop out once and awhile to say a word or two, and then he'd go and hide again. Secret Sauce Agent's skin was flesh color in the story books and on the toys, but Imperial for some strange reason opted not to paint his face. It made him look kind of sinister, so I designated him as the villain when I played with these toys.

"Hamburgermeister"
HAMBURGERMEISTERBeing a Hamburgermeister isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact, I've been called Hamburgermeister on many an occasion. This little guy hails from Germany and was always clad in lederhosen. He was known for cracking incredibly bad jokes and had a thick German accent. Sadly, the coolest thing about this cat is his name.

There was a nice run of Jack in the Box items made throughout the 70s. I own a few more vintage Jack in the Box items and will make sure to showcase them very soon, so stay tuned. If you too were a fan of the old Jack in the Box characters, or had an affinity for other fast food icons of the era, let me hear about them in the comment section below.

Spooky Season Snacks and Treats

I tried to stay strong this week with my eating habits, but have waivered a bit. You see, this is traditionally the start of my eating season. Oktoberfest is near, fall and pumpkin beers are being released left and right, October is National Pizza Month, and Spooky Season brings with it a host of deliciousness. Here's the stuff that reeled me in and got me to open my wallet this week..

Cheetos Bag of Bones
Cheetos Bag of Bones

Cheetos Bag of Bones

I've always loved these little white cheddar flavored puffs. I haven't eaten any in well over two years, so I thought it was time to get a little taste. I had a small bowl one afternoon and enjoyed them immensely. So much so, that I gave the bag to my Son and told him to finish them off, so I wouldn't be able to.

Hot chocolate bombs usually aren't my jam, and is more of a thing my bride really digs. However, this is the first time I've ever seen a Frankenstein themed Hot Chocolate Bomb. This was an insta-buy for sure! It now resides in my refrigerator until a cold enough evening hits Florida for me to enjoy it properly.

Junior Mints

Junior Mints.. these can be very refreshing. Especially with those spooky orange and black centers. I always get a kick out of seeing these hit the shelves every year around this time.

Blue Point Pumpkin Beer
Mother Pumpkin Ale
by Blue Point Brewing

I love a good pumpkin beer, and this one by Blue Point is incredible. A very nice pumpkin ale that is mild and not overdone or heavy handed with the spices. A great beer to get you in the mood for the season.

So that's it for now. Believe me when I say there were probably another dozen items that I thought about buying, but held strong for now. Don't be surprised if a few more seasonal delicacies end up being showcased here very soon.

National Pepperoni Pizza Day - September 20th

National Pepperoni Pizza Day

That's right, it's once again National Pepperoni Pizza Day! I personally celebrated at lunch with a huge Sicilian Slice.

Pepperoni Pizza Slice

I dined on this monster slice at Pizza Ponte, located at Disney Springs. The slice was perfect as always, and of course hit the spot. Did you get a chance to celebrate National Pepperoni Pizza Day this year?

You still have time, or you can always celebrate later. In my book, it's always Pepperoni Pizza Day somewhere.

Oktoberfest Pizza

It's nearing that time of year again friends.. Oktoberfest! Want to incorporate some pizza into your Oktoberfest celebrations this year? It's easy to make German themed pizza, and you're only limited by your imagination.

Check out this little Oktoberfest inspired pizza I threw together. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but was quite surprised with the results.

Basically it's homemade dough with a 50/50 olive oil & stone ground mustard sauce for a base, mozzarella cheese, authentic beer bratwurst & knockwurst I found at ALDI. Finally, I added some Sauerkraut for the last two minutes of the bake.

The cheese actually toned down the sauerkraut a wee bit, softening some of its punch. It truly was an enjoyable pizza to eat. You get all of the flavors from eating grilled Brats w/sauerkraut, presented atop a nice light pizza crust.

Something else I may try in the future, is to add an egg wash to the crust for browning, and sprinkle some course salt to mimic a pretzel.

I also might try using a beer cheese for the sauce base. With a cheese base, I may even try using some sautéed shredded cabbage rather than Sauerkraut. Some strips of schnitzel may work nicely with the cheese sauce base as well.

It was fun making this pizza and I look forward to tweaking the recipe in the future. When I do, I'll make sure to share the results here.

Racoon and Possum running through my mind

As you may have gathered, my thoughts often revolve around the recent and not so recent past. That being said, I've been finding myself intently reminiscing about my grandparents lately. When I was a young boy living in California, many an afternoon was spent at their house in Ontario, which was located on a busy street named Mission Boulevard. Back then, there was nothing I loved more than relaxing on the porch with my grandfather. We would while away the hours, sipping on soda and watching the trains in the distance roll by. During those afternoons, Grandpa would share stories about his youth, as well as an infinite array of life experiences.

Sometimes when there was a lull in the conversation, he would entertain me by yodeling, whistling, and singing old songs. Many of those songs are permanently burned into my brain, and often manifest themselves when I think of dear old granddad. However, there's one song in particular that I often whistle and hum to this very day.

Throw them 'simmons down
A "simmon" aka persimmon, is a wonderful fruit that somewhat resembles a tomato in color and shape.  The varieties I remember eating, kind of mimicked a plum in flavor.  My Grandfather used to sing a song about them that I used to love, and it went like this..

Possum in the 'simmon tree, Racoon on the ground..

Racoon shouts to the possum, throw them 'simmons down.

Throw them Simmons down.. throw them 'simmons down..

Racoon shouts to the possum, throw them 'simmons down.

That's all there was to it.. a catchy little tune that always made me giggle and laugh. Every last detail about the way my Grandfather used to sing it, is permanently housed in my data banks. I can still vividly recall the way we held his pitch, tone, and even the speed he sang it.

I never thought much about the origin of this song, but always assumed he picked it up somewhere in the south. I decided to do a little research on the song, as well as persimmon trees, and was amused at the info I came across online. It's apparently well documented that possums love persimmon trees and their ripened persimmon fruit, as do racoons. I was elated to find the title and full lyrics to the song my Grandfather used to sing to me. Here's the skinny..

Raccoon's Got a Bushy Tail

Raccoon's got a bushy tail,

Possum's tail goes bare,

Rabbit's got no tail at all

Just a little old bunch of hair.

Raccoon is a mighty man,

He rambles through the dark,

You ought to see him hunt his den

When he hears Old Ranger bark.

Possum up persimmon tree,

Raccoon on the ground,

Raccoon says to possum,

"Won't you shake them 'simmons down."

Rabbit up in the gum stump,

'Coon in the holler,

Possum in the 'tater patch,

Fat as he can waller.

Raccoon's got a bushy tail,

Possum's tail goes bare,

Rabbit's got no tail at all

Just a little old bunch of hair.

I was surprised to learn that it was a five verse folk song that was originally sung by

It doesn't surprise me that Grandpa's version of the song is so different from the official version above. Grandpa most likely sung the song as he remembered it, or wanted to remember it. He got a real kick out of singing it, so maybe it was his favorite verse. That's how old folk songs and stories are sometimes. Liberties are taken with them, and the changes end up sticking over the years. I'm just happy the verse Grandpa used to sing, was in tact enough for me to dig up some history on this song.

In the end I'm more partial to Grandpa's version, but it was very satisfying to learn the history behind the song that we both loved so much.

By the way.. I'd be remiss if I didn't thank Smithsonian Folkways  for providing me with some back history, and links to buy "Racoon's got a bushy tail" and many other great folk songs written by Pete Seeger.

Retro TV and Movie Dads with personalities us Gen-Xers know well

I'm one of those Gen-Xers fortunate enough to be a kid during the entire decade of the 70s and 80s. Now that I'm a father of three, I realize that most fathers I knew, were a bit more rigid and less emotionally available to their children back in the day.  A lot of Dads believed in exercising what some might call "tough love" and saw no use for warm and tender emotional displays.

Whether you agree with that type of parenting or not, you've got to admit that these types of fatherly characteristics can make for some unbelievably funny anecdotes, especially in television and movies. That being said, here are three retro TV Dads who remind me a lot of several fathers I knew back in the 70s and 80s.
Jack Arnold from the Wonder Years TV Show
Jack Arnold - The Wonder Years
This guy is the epitome of most 70s dads I knew. Hardened men that had either been to war, or worked unbelievably hard to squeak out a modest living. These were the kinds of dads that could strike the fear of God into you with a simple glance.

There were no entitlements with these types of working class dads, and it was their way or the highway. I'm not going to say that the boys back in this decade never got into trouble, but with fathers like this, a lot of us never got too far off of the straight and narrow path. Many of us kids didn't push the limits, for fear of what our fathers would do.

This forty-six second clip will pretty much give you a feel of what a lot of conversations between father and son were like for me and a lot of my buddies back in the day..

The Old Man - "A Christmas Story"
The Old Man - "A Christmas Story"

Darren McGavin did an exceptional job portraying this character.  Ironically, now that I'm a father, I can see similarities between The Old Man and myself. We both get a wild look in our eye when mom is cooking a turkey, we both time ourselves to see how fast we can change a flat tire, and we both love seeing our kids squirm before bestowing the perfect gift upon them.

While he isn't as cold and guarded as Jack Arnold, he was still a stern father who was set in his ways. While it may have seemed that he lived to complain about the furnace, the Oldsmobile, and fuse box that were constantly on the fritz, he attacked problems full force. He was a resilient man who could tackle any obstacle that came his way. Still, on occasion you'd see him take off the 'Dad Hat' and do a little dance, get a little grabby with his bride, or offer his kid a sip of wine on Christmas Day.

Ed Goodson - S#*! my Dad says TV Show
Ed Goodson - S#*! my Dad says

William Shatner played this old school Dad in this funny but incredibly short lived television series. Ed is a retired, cantankerous, 72 year old military physician, who's been divorced three times. He reminds me of many old school dads who shun technology like wireless internet, and still dig in their heels bucking against cable television and compact discs.

He's a throwback Dad with old fashioned views, who often blurts out politically incorrect statements and rants without notice. He shows more outward affection for his garden than to his sons, but makes gestures and does things for them that vaguely display his love for them. The poor guy is the product of an era where men were taught not to show emotion, which can actually be pretty funny in this day and age. I laugh when I watch this show, because I remember many of my friends Dad's and grandfathers "going off" like Ed on a regular basis. They didn't care if we would giggle or argue with them. In fact, they welcomed the banter. They were comfortable in their own skin and were unapologetically themselves 100% of the time.

Some of the snide remarks and observations Ed blurted out on the series, made my wife laugh out loud. She then turn to me and say "That sounds like something you'd say!"  What can I say? I'm a retro type of guy who was raised by an old school Baby Boomer.

Most of the working class Dads I was acquainted with, fit the bill of at least one, if not all three of these TV Dads. One thing is for sure, fathers can make for some interesting stories to share with friends, siblings, and family members. Heck, I'm sure my kids will be laughing about some of my retro quirks for many years to come.

The Top 3 Biscuits in restaurants and Fast Food

In honor of 'National Biscuit Month' I decided to write a short post on the three best biscuits I've come across in my travels. I believe if you're going to sell biscuits to the masses, you need to make them from scratch everyday. It's my prerequisite for a good biscuit, and that's why you won't see biscuits from the likes of McDonald's or Burger King even mentioned here.

#3 Hardee's

Hardee's Biscuit

The Hardee's biscuit has always been high up on my list of favorite biscuits, but I must admit that I remember them being much better before their merger with Carl's Jr. These are big, fluffy, buttery biscuits with just the right amount of pull and crispiness in all the right places.

The only reason they don't rank higher on this list is because Hardee's goes hard on the butter. I'm not complaining mind you, its just that some mornings I like a nice mild buttery flavor that fades a bit once you get to the center of the biscuit. The butter flavor on these biscuits simply never lets up.

A breakfast staple of mine for years was Hardee's Cinnamon Raisin Biscuit. For some strange reason, they removed them from their breakfast menu. I've heard rumors you can find them at different Hardee's, and the company even stated they heard the consumers and brought them back. For the life of me, I can't find them at any Hardee's I've visited in recent years. I always find the Hardee's that offer a sub par cinnamon roll instead of the cinnamon raisin biscuits. I probably haven't tasted one of these delicacies for at least ten years now, and its downright frustrating.

#2 Bob Evans

Bob Evan's Biscuits

Bob Evans biscuits aren't quite as big as Hardee's biscuits, but they more than make up for it in balanced buttery taste and an incredibly fluffy center. Made fresh all morning, I have never had a bad biscuit at Bob Evans.

Bob Evan's Biscuits and Gravy

Bob Evans does hold a number one spot on another one of my lists, and that is.. 'Best Biscuits and Gravy'. Mind you, that's Best Biscuits and Gravy from a restaurant chain, because my dear Grandmother's biscuits and gravy were on a whole other level! (I think her secret ingredient was love).

Bob Evan's INCREDIBLE Biscuits and Gravy

Bob Evans sausage gravy does remind me of my Grandma's gravy however. She was an Oklahoma farm girl who made everything from scratch. I remember being mesmerized as a child while watching her in the kitchen making her sausage gravy. It was as if she was making something out of nothing, and that something tasted like heaven on earth. I think of her every time eat biscuits and gravy from Bob Evans, and that's usually 99% of the time when I dine there.

Bob Evans is very proud of their sausage gravy as they should be. I love the fact that they share their recipe for it on their website, which I've linked below..

#1 Bojangle's

Bojangle's Biscuit Sandwich

Bojangle's biscuits offer everything I want and need in a biscuit. First off, these are buttermilk biscuits, which set them apart from many of their competitors. They have a nice buttery flavor that doesn't punch you in the mouth, with a beautiful texture both inside and out. They don't have that fast food chain cookie cutter look to them. They stand on their own merit, not having to be doused with butter to be tasty. They just look and taste like a beautiful homemade biscuit, and remind me of my Grandma's more than any other biscuit out there.

Bojangle's biscuits are made from scratch all day long and pulled fresh from the oven every twenty minutes. In the past, I have arrived at Bojangle's that were currently out of biscuits. I also happened to arrive 5 minutes after the last batch was placed in the oven. There was never a question that I was going to wait that fifteen minutes for my biscuits! There have been times on road trips where my bride was a little more than irritated at me for waiting so long for our biscuits, but she didn't grow up eating biscuits, so I don't expect her to fully understand. Biscuits are life!

But wait.. there's more
Bojangle's also offers some incredible breakfast sandwiches on their menu. I've indulged in many over the years including their Pork Chop Biscuit, Cajun Filet Biscuit and Steak Biscuit.

As much as it pained me to see Hardee's Cinnamon Raisin Biscuit discontinued, Bojangle's more than filled the void with their Bo Berry Biscuits! A made from scratch buttermilk biscuit stuffed with blueberries and drizzled with sweet icing.

I eat a lot different these days, and I might eat biscuits once a month now. It's a far cry from my days of religiously grabbing two biscuits and a coffee for my daily commute. Honestly, part of the reason I was able to effectively achieve my fitness goals over the last year and a half, was due to a lack of tasty fast food options in my area.

However, Bojangles is opening fifteen new stores around the Orlando area soon. They once had quite the presence in Florida. However, they restructured and closed all of their central Florida stores several years back. I guess they figure that the world's number one tourist destination needs more Bojangle's in its life. I'm super happy that I will be able to visit Bojangle's more often now. However, I hope one of these fifteen new stores isn't too close to my home. My willpower falters around delicious breakfast sandwiches and biscuits.

I'm always up to sample biscuits from new and not so new spots. Let me know if you have a favorite biscuit you think I need to try in the comments section. Who knows, maybe they will knock one of my top three off of the list.
