10 Advertising Jingles That Still Live Rent-Free in My Head (and Probably Yours Too)

🎶 Top 10 Advertising Jingles That Live Rent-Free in My Head

The other day I was driving around running errands, and I passed a Burger King. The first thing that popped into my head? That classic line:  🎵 BK.. Have it your way ðŸŽµ

And just like that, I was humming it before I even hit the next red light.

That’s when it hit me, there are certain people in advertising who are straight-up geniuses. I have a multitude of jingles from old TV and radio ads that will live permanently in my head, no matter how much I wish I could clear them out to free up some brain space.

There’s no particular order here, I’m just plucking them straight out of my data banks. Let’s go.

1. The Big Mac Song (McDonald’s)

🎵 Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. 🎵
No shocker that this one’s first. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a huge McDonald’s fan, and this jingle is practically part of my DNA. I can’t even think of a Big Mac without this song firing up in my brain. Every few months, when it’s time for that Big Mac fix, the jingle comes right along for the ride.

2. “Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm Is There”

🎵 Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. 🎵
Before Barry Manilow was filling arenas, he was writing jingles. This one’s easily one of the most famous. The wild part? He reportedly didn’t get royalties for it. Imagine if he got even a penny every time this played since it first hit the airwaves in 1971. He’d probably own an island by now.

3. Roto-Rooter

🎵 Call Roto-Rooter, that’s the name, and away go troubles down the drain. 🎵
This one is pure simplicity and genius. It’s so direct and catchy that it actually makes plumbing sound cheerful. Something so cheery.. for something so disgusting. Whoever wrote it deserves a lifetime of free drain cleanings.

4. Easy, Breezy, Beautiful — CoverGirl

🎵 Easy, breezy, beautiful… CoverGirl. 🎵
I get absolutely no joy knowing this one’s taking up space in my head, but there it is. It’ll pop up out of nowhere sometimes, and I’m immediately annoyed and impressed at the same time.

5. Oscar Mayer Wiener Song

🎵 Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener, that is what I truly wish to be. 🎵
This one’s been around forever, and somehow manages to be both wholesome and slightly ridiculous. I can still picture the commercials from the ’70s and ’80s with kids singing it on picnic blankets.

6. Kit Kat “Break” Song

🎵 Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar. 🎵
If there’s a more contagious candy jingle in history, I haven’t found it. Everyone knows it, everyone hums it, and it’s impossible to stop once you start.

7. Folgers Coffee

🎵 The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup. 🎵
There’s something comforting about this one. Even if you weren’t a coffee drinker, you knew that line. It’s basically the national anthem of early mornings.

8. Meow Mix

🎵 Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow, meow… 🎵
This one’s ridiculous in the best way. It’s literally just cats meowing, but it’s so effective that I could probably still sing it note-for-note today.

9. Alka-Seltzer

🎵 Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is. 🎵
There’s something so cheerful about this one considering it’s about heartburn relief. The jingle alone almost made the product seem fun.

10. Band-Aid Song

🎵 I am stuck on Band-Aid brand, ‘cause Band-Aid’s stuck on me. 🎵
Catchy, wholesome, and sung by kids in every version I can remember. It’s the perfect closer, the kind of jingle that burrows in your brain and refuses to leave.

And there you have it, the 10 jingles that permanently live rent-free in my head. I know I’m forgetting more than a few (probably on purpose), but these are the heavy hitters.

Which ones get stuck in your head the most? Drop them in the comments. Maybe I’ll regret asking, but hey.. misery loves company.

Whatever Happened to Hostess Raspberry Filled Powdered Donuts? (And a Surprising Comeback Clue!)

This is a long overdue update/revisiting of my post: RIP Hostess Raspberry Filled Powdered Donuts, one of my highest viewed blog posts of all time.

Hostess Raspberry Filled Powdered Donuts were discontinued around 2013 following Hostess's bankruptcy and restructuring.  Despite some nostalgic demand, Hostess has not announced plans to reintroduce them. Fans have expressed their longing for these treats on various platforms, sharing fond memories and lamenting their absence from store shelves.

While no plans for their return seem to be on the horizon, I saw something at the store the other day that stopped me in my tracks for a few seconds..

Glazed Cinnamon Rolls are back, but not from Hostess

When I first saw Glazed Cinnamon Rolls on the shelves again in this great retro packaging, I got excited thinking Hostess had brought them back. Then it hit me — Hostess doesn’t even own Wonder anymore.

If Wonder still holds the rights to these Cinnamon Rolls, could they also have the rights to the long-lost Cherry Sweet Rolls that so many of us loved? In case you missed it, check out my article entitled: Discontinued Hostess and Tastykake Cherry Sweet Rolls

Wonder now currently has an entire donut lineup that goes toe-to-toe with Hostess. So if we’re dreaming big here.. how amazing would it be if Wonder decided to revive the legendary raspberry-filled donut? Now that would be a comeback worth celebrating.

Current Alternatives
For those seeking a similar experience, some alternative brands have been suggested by my readers:

Franz Bakery: Known for their raspberry-filled powdered donuts, Franz Bakery has been recommended by fans as a comparable option.

Katz Gluten-Free: Offers a raspberry-filled jelly donut that is kosher and free of preservatives, providing a different yet enjoyable alternative, however they are not currently listed on their current product lineup, so I can't speak as to if they are still available l.

Great Value (Walmart): Their raspberry-filled powdered donuts have been noted as a budget-friendly substitute, though opinions on taste vary. I personally have had a tough time tracking them down to decide for myself.

While these alternatives may not replicate the exact taste and texture of Hostess's original product, they offer options for those craving a similar treat.

Sorry I don't have more to share at this point, but promise to write about any developments or news that's even remotely related to this long lost delicacy. Make sure to bug Hostess and Wonder and ask them to bring back our sorely missed Raspberry Filled Donuts.

Google’s New ‘G’ Logo: A Retro Revival or Just a Gradient Gimmick?

Google just rolled out a fresh version of their iconic ‘G’ logo. At first glance, it’s the same multicolored letter we all know and love, but now it’s got a brighter, more modern gradient. For a company that’s been around forever 'in internet years', even small changes like this get people talking.

What’s interesting is that it sort of harks back to the Google logos of the past. There’s something about seeing those old colors pop in a slightly updated way that makes you stop and think, “Oh yeah, I remember that.” It’s a little retro, a little modern, and definitely Google.

I’ve put a side-by-side comparison below so you can see for yourself. On the left is the last logo, the one we’ve all gotten used to over the years. On the right is the new gradient version — subtle changes, but enough to notice if you’re paying attention.

It makes me wonder: do we really need all these tiny tweaks, or is it just fun to play around with nostalgia and branding? Either way, it’s kind of fun to see a company like Google nod back to its roots while still moving forward.

NEW COKE Returns! An 80's flop.. or perfectly executed conspiracy?

Yes I get excited about stuff like this happening, and yes.. I will be buying NEW COKE once again, some 30 years later!  As part of a tie in with the show 'Stranger Things' Season Three, it looks like NEW COKE will once again be released sometime this summer.  Details are sketchy at this point, but it's coming!

NEW COKE has largely been considered a PR nightmare and failure of the Coca-Cola Company. The company unsuccessfully tried to roll out a new hipper version of Coca Cola, only for it to be hated by the masses.  Or was it a failure?

Conspiracy?
Maybe I watched too conspiracy movies as a kid, but I stand by what my 15 year old self immediately thought back in 1985, and that is.. Coca-Cola knew exactly what they were doing.  It would actually be a perfectly executed ruse if this were the case.  I mean really.. let's think about this for a minute..

  • 1. Release a sub par version of a classic product.

  • 2. One month later respond to the public outcry and announce the return of the original product named "Coca-Cola Classic".

  • 3. Release re-branded product to market in record time.

  • 4. Watch their stocks soar as everyone is drunk with nostalgia, as they are reunited with a classic piece of American history and Americana.  Not to mention recapturing the market lead against Pepsi in the brutal Soda wars of the 80s!

My friends and I performed our very own taste tests and decided we liked Old Coke better than its new counterpart.  Later that week, we all went out across town buying up cases of the old formula to stash in our bedrooms.  We knew it wouldn't last forever, so we cautiously consumed it to make it last as long as we could.  In the end.. we still had much of our stash left by the time 'Coca-Cola Classic' was hitting shelves.  Once again all was right with the world.

From what I remember, I preferred old Coke to the new formula.. but didn't hate NEW COKE by any means.  I was raised on RC Cola but would also drink Coke about 30% of the time.  I'm a sucker for nostalgia and most anything retro, so I am pretty excited about this promotion, and will be scampering to buy some new.. old.. NEW COKE this summer!

Retro consumer products

You don't hear these product names mentioned too often anymore. However, for a fella my age.. they're definitely burned into my memory banks.

Old school pomade that hit the market in 1928.  The tag line for this product was "A Little Dab'll Do Ya!".  The product is still available in stores to this day, although few young folks know what it is or does.  I'm wondering if the right kind of retro marketing campaign could breathe life into the product once again?

Postum

A powdered roasted grain beverage that was made from from wheat bran, wheat, molasses, and malodextrin from corn.  Touted as a caffeine free alternative to coffee, I remember it tasting like a cross between coffee and tea.  Never was a big fan.  It was discontinued fairly recently in 2007.

This stuff used to come in a little green glass bottle, and was my old man's answer to a wonder drug.  You could use it for acne, cold sores, fever blisters, scrapes, nicks, chaffed skin, insect bites, and more.  Campho Phenique is also still sold to this day.

A car wax created in 1910.  My old man always had a can of Simoniz carnauba paste lying around the garage somewhere, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he still had a vintage can tucked away somewhere.

A malted milk flavoring product kind of like Nesquik.  Mom was happy giving it to us because it was healthier than chocolate milk. Us kids weren't too terribly picky, and it was close enough to the real thing for us.

A colorful and fun circus themed sugary breakfast cereal with marshmallows, born in the 70s.  The recipe was changed by General Mills from an oat based cereal to corn base.  It totally changed the taste, and is the reason I no longer buy it.
