Retro Review: Irish Spring vs. Zest — Which Classic Bar Soap Still Reigns Supreme? (2025 Update)

If you grew up in the 70s, 80s, or even the 90s, you probably remember the same two bar soaps sitting on just about everyone’s bathroom counter: Irish Spring and Zest.

Both were cheap, loud, memorable, and built their entire reputations on commercials that drilled their slogans straight into our brains. And because I’ve been on a little “old-school grooming” kick, I decided to go full retro and test them head-to-head again.

I used each bar for over a week , real shower use, real Florida sweat, real life.. to see which one actually performs the best in 2025.

Irish Spring: The Heavy Hitter

The classic version Irish Spring has always been the in-your-face, hit-you-with-a-green-brick-of-clean kind of soap. And honestly? It still is.

What I Tested

What I Noticed

Cleaning power:

Irish Spring still cuts through everything! Sweat, dirt, funk, sunscreen, garden grime.. with zero hesitation.

Scent:

Strong. Like “your shower suddenly moved to the mountains of Ireland” strong. You’ll smell clean even if you weren’t trying.

Downside:

It dries skin if you’re not careful.

If you’ve got dry skin or live somewhere with low humidity, you’ll feel it.

It works… but you can tell it's milder. It’s fine for regular days but not heavy-duty sweat or grime.

Scent:

Light, clean, and disappears pretty fast.

Skin feel:

Definitely gentler. No real dryness, no tight feeling.

Verdict:

A solid “everyday” soap if you want clean without the punch.

2025 Update: Do They Still Hold Up Today?

Short answer: Yes.

Irish Spring still dominates the cleaning department, and Zest is still the gentler daily driver.

Nothing’s unseated them yet in the cheap, no-nonsense bar soap world.

Irish Spring still reigns until another bar soap proves me wrong.

Let's not forget about the value as well. I can buy 20 bars of Irish Spring at Sam's for under $10. That's roughly 50 cents a bar, and those are the bigger 4 ounce bars to boot. Now that my friends, is some serious, penny pinching, recession busting savings right there.

If a new contender shows up.. retro or modern, I’ll test it next.
